The Library of The Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology
was founded together with the Institute in 1918 and was
situated in the building at the Śniadeckich Street No 8 in
Warsaw. The main collection also contains books and
journals of the Libraries of the Hydrobiological Station in
Wigry, of the Sea Station in Hel, of the Biometrical
Departament in Warsaw and the library of Biological Station
in Pińsk. In September 1939, the main collection was
destroyed by German authorities. When the World War II
finished the Institute and the library were rebuilt in Łódź,
and remained until 1954, when they were moved to Warsaw,
Pasteur Street, No 3.
Nowadays the
library gathers: books, periodicals, CD-s, microfilms and old prints. The
methods of acquisition are: purchase, subscription, exchange, gifts and others.
The collection amounts 24 927 volumes of books, including 383 doctoral and
postdoctoral theses. It currently receives 142 periodicals, including 68 as a
foreign subscription. At present there are 1482 titles and 47 884 volumes of
journals. The library exchanges periodicals published by the Nencki Institute
with 27 contractors, in this with 22 from abroad. The profile of the collection
is connected with following science fields: Cell Biology, Molecular Biology,
Biochemistry, Ethology, Neurobiology and Psychophysiology.
In the library
there are: the traditional alphabetical catalogues of books and periodicals, the
subject catalogue of books and the on-line catalogues of books and periodicals
for years 1975-2007.

same scientific profile as well as the group of Warsaw libraries cooperating
within the intergrated computer system „Horizon” (since 1997 the library has
been a member of the Consortium of Scientific Libraries in Warsaw)
- access to many databases: Science Citation Index Expended, PubMed, ISI Journal

- on-line access to periodicals: SpringerLink, ScienceDirect, Wiley-Blackwell,
Ebscohost and journals subscribed by the library.
The librarians prepare the annual „List of the Institute employees' publications”.
