Research profile

Neurodegeneration is a common theme of many nervous system diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, ALS, head trauma, epilepsy and stroke. The incidence of these devastating disorders is increasing rapidly in ageing population and current treatments are inadequate. Our studies concentrate on the degeneration processes in ageing neurons and the reversal of brain dysfunction induced by ageing. We attempt to link cellular and behavioral levels of the brain processes present during physiological and pathological ageing. Our main research interest are the neurochemical and morphological correlates of the basal forebrain cholinergic system in the adult and ageing brain and potential therapeutic effects of neurotrophic factors during ageing or in the neurodegenerative diseases. Currently the team’s main interest is in tau protein involvement in cytoskeletal signaling in animal models - rat and mouse- of neurodegenerative disorders.
