In December 2011 the new 2012 Nencki Institute booklet came out. It consists of 104 pages, starting with a historical note and subsequently providing current, nicely illustrated information on all Nencki departments and research labs as well as supporting units.

VIII Schooling for People taking care of experimental animals

In days from 29 of November to 2nd December 2011 in the Nencki Institute, under patronage of the Country Ethical Commission occurred “VIIIth Schooling for people taking care of experimental animals” organized by Institute of Experimental Biology named after M. Nencki; University of Warsaw’s Department of Biology and Polish Society of Sciences about Laboratory Animals (pollasa.sggw.pl).

Confocal Microscopy workshops in Nencki Institute

On 30.11.2011 and 12.01.2011 Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology organized Confocal Microscopy Workshop. The aim of the workshop was to acquainted potential users with operation and equipment capabilities of the facilities located in the Laboratory of Confocal Microscopy.

Agreement between the Institute of Protein Biochemistry (Naple, Italy) and the Nencki Institute

On November 18, 2011 an Agreement has been signed between the Institute of Protein Biochemistry (Naple), National Research Council of Italy and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

Award of the Division of Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences 2010

The research team let by prof. Katarzyna Kwiatkowska and prof. Andrzej Sobota from the Laboratory of Plasma Membrane receptors was granted with the award for outstanding scientific achievements published in prestigious journals in 2008-2010 on the role of sphingolipids and phosphatidylinositols as signal messengers for immune receptors.

Nencki Institute a Project Partner of Academic Entrepreneurship Foundation

Nencki Institute is a project partner of Academic Entrepreneurship Foundation to award 12 scholarships for Ph.D. students. Twelve Ph.D. students from Mazovia Region will be awarded with annual scholarships amounting 3000 zł/month.

The Nencki Institute started cooperation with the Polish Scientific Publishers PWN on publishing E-books. All electronic books from Nencki will be published at Internet site at www.virtualo.pl. They will be available free of charge from this web site.
First to be published is a book put together by Nencki PhD students entitled Discover Nencki (http://virtualo.pl/odkryj_instytut_nenckiego/ebook/c2i15803/)

Nencki Institute a leader in securing research funding from the National Science Centre

We are happy to announce that the Nencki Institute scientists received funding for 23 research projects for a total of 10 336 000,00 PLN. After the first call for proposals from the National Science Centre (NCN) the Institute is the leader among all scientfic institutions participating in the CePT consortium in the area of life sciences. We congratulate all the successful aplicants who secured funding for their cutting edge scientific research.

The winner of the third edition of the Nencki Award is Prof. Elżbieta Jankowska from the Department of Physiology, University of Göteborg (Sweden). The 15th Science Festival took place in Warsaw on September 16-25, 2011.

Honourary Membership in Scientific Societies

During the opening ceremony of the 2nd Polish Congress of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, which took place in Krakow between September 5 and 9, 2011 the title of Honorary Member of the Polish Cell Biology Society was bestowed on Prof. Leszek Kuźnicki and Prof. Lech Wojtczak from the Nencki Institute PAS.

Workshop “Imaging neural activity in sensory systems: experimental and modeling approach”

On September 19 and 20, 2011 the workshop on methods of imaging neuronal activity was held in the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology. The workshop was associated with 10th International Congress of the Polish Neuroscience Society 2011.

On September 13, 2011 during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace, on behalf of the President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski, the Head of the Presidential Chancellery Jacek Michałowski awarded Prof. Jerzy Duszyński with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for outstanding scientific achievements.

High School No 3 in Suwałki named after Alfred Lityński

On September 16, 2011 High School No 3 in Suwałki received the name of Prof. Alfred Lityński, outstanding scientist and long time associate of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology.

PhD studies

The additional recruitment for PhD studies is closed. After the interview, six new students were enrolled into first year. All in all 23 PhD students will start studying in Nencki Institute from the October.

Laureate of the "Homing Plus" programme of the Foundation for Polish Science

Dr. Marta Maleszewska from the Laboratory of Transcriptional Regulation, headed by Prof. Bożena Kaminska, is a winner of the HOMING PLUS Programme competition from the Foundation for Polish Science. The objective of the project is to investigate the role of epigenetic mechanisms in differentiation of proinvasive macrophages in gliomas.

15. Scientific Picnic of the Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre

Scientists from the Nencki Institute co-author a paper published in the Science* magazine explaining one of the secrets of cancer formation.

A cellular protein called promyelocytic leukaemia protein (PML) is essential for proper execution of the programmed cell death process and can become a target of new anti-tumour therapy. A paper on the mechanism of cancer formation, co-authored by Polish scientists, was published in the Internet edition of the prestigious Science magazine.

First session of the Council of National Centre for Science

Professor Barbara Kudrycka, the Minister of Science and Higer Education, welcomed newly appointed members of the Council of the National Centre for Science. 24 members of the Council were selected from over 500 candidates. Prof. Leszek Kaczmarek, one of the distinguished experts, will be representing Life Sciences in the Council.

Ochota Biocentre - Opening ceremony of the PhD Studies academic year 2009/2010

Following the last year initiative, the beginning of the academic year 2009/2010 of the Ochota Biocentre PhD Studies was celebrated in the hall of the Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering.

The 2010 Brain Awareness Week in Warsaw

The 2010 Brain Awareness Week took place in Warsaw between March 13 and 19, 2010 as part of a global educational campaign called the International Brain Awareness Week. This international event has been organised for the 15th time on the initiative of the International Alliance for Brain Initiatives DANA. Each year, in the third week of March, a multitude of events are held in different countries to popularise knowledge about the brain, its function in health and disability. They introduce the newest scientific achievements in the field of brain research and raise social awareness of the significance of conducting scientific research on the nervous system. For the past 13 years the Brain Awareness Week has been organised in Warsaw annually by the Polish branch of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain (EDAB), the Polish Neuroscience Society and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences with support from the Committee on Neurobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the editorial office of Polityka, a Polish weekly magazine. As always, this year’s lectures were delivered by invited speakers, distinguished specialists in neurophysiology and psychiatry.

Award of the Division of Biological Sciences

The 2009 Award for the scientific achievements for the set of papers published in 2006-2008 and dealing with the “Regulation and role of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9, MMP-9 inphysiological and pathological neuronal plasticity” was granted to research team.

VIII Scientific Meeting for Teacher

On 5th of December 2009 VIII Scientific Meeting For Teacher was organized by the the Nencki Institute and the Science Festival School. In this event took part more than 60 persons from all over Poland. Meeting was covered by the Honorary Patronage of the Mazovian Chief Education Officer.

Prof. Kris Turlejski – New Chair of the State Ethics Committee

Prof. Kris Turlejski, a neurobiologist from the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology who until now chaired the First Local Ethics Committee in Warsaw has been nominated by the Minister of Science for the member of the State Ethics Committee and then elected its Chair.

An agreement was signed regarding construction and equipment of the Centre for Neurobiology (CN) at the Nencki Institute

On November 2, 2009 Prof. Adam Szewczyk signed, on behalf of the Nencki Institute, a bilateral Cooperation Agreement concerning execution of the CePT Project: Centre of Preclinical Research and Technology with the Medical University of Warsaw. The Nencki Institute along with the Medical University of Warsaw – the CePT consortium coordinator and the University of Warsaw is one of the main beneficiaries of the CePT project. The value of the Centre for Neurobiology (CN) investment has been estimated at 52 million PLN, which constitutes approx. 15% of the total value of the CePT project (359 million PLN).

International PhD Studies at the Nencki Institute

Dr Ksenia Meyza, from the group of prof. Jolanta Zagrodzka, was the winner (one of three) of The PNS Young Investigator Awards, during The 9th International Congress of the Polish Neuroscience Society, Warsaw 2009, for the lecture entitled: „Electrophysiological correlates of diverse emotional reactivity of Roman High – (RHA/Verh) and Roman Low Avoidance (RLA/Verh) rats”.

XIII Warsaw Science Festival 2009

The XIII Science Festival took place in Warsaw between September 19 and 27. Each year the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology actively participates in this event.

Award for presentation of the results by young researchers

Ms. Dorota Wypych has received II Price for the presentation entitled “Studies on local dynamics of calcium transients in glioma C6 cells”, presented during the VIIth Parnas Conference, organized by the Polish and Ukrainian Biochemical Societies, that took place in Yalta

13. Scientific Picnic of the Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre

On 30th of May 2009 the 13th Scientific Picnic was held on the New Town Square and Podzamcze Areas. This year picnic’s motto was: „SCIENCE AMONG THE STARS”. Like in previous years the Nencki Institute took part in this event and prepared series of presentations under the common title: „EARTHLY BODY, SPIRIT FROM THE STARS”

Hands-on course at Nencki Institute

On 14-15 May at Nencki Institute a hands-on course “Introduction to modeling of nervous system” took place. The course was organized under the auspices of the Polish Society for Neuroscience.

Polish Children’s Fund

Again, as every year, the Fund’s scholars visited the Nencki Institute and participated in lab activities and research training.

Reporting Session

Session of the Scientific Council 7. devoted to the 2008 Annual Report took place on February 27, 2009. Besides the information given by Prof. Adam Szewczyk, Director of the Nencki Institute, there were research reports of Dr. Katarzyna Łukasiuk and Dr. Grzegorz Wilczyński, the winners of the Group Leader 2005 competition.

2008 Prime Minister Awards

We have the pleasure to inform you that two of our colleagues are among the prize-winners of the 2008 Prime Minister Awards for PhD dissertations, postdoctoral dissertations and scientific, scientific and technical, or artistic activity:
Kamila Wolanin for her PhD dissertation entitled “The role of Bcr-Abl oncoprotein in the regulation of the mitotic spindle assembly checkpoint function and polyploidization” – supervised by prof. dr hab. Ewa Sikora
Filip Konopacki for his PhD dissertation “Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), its expression in the stimulated brain and influence on astroglia function” – supervised by prof. dr hab. Leszek Kaczmarek.

Bolesław Skarżyński Award

The Polish Biochemical Society has granted Prof. Lech Wojtczak and Dr. Krzysztof Zabłocki with Bolesław Skarżyński Award for the best article published in a quarterly journal “Postępy Biochemii” in year 2008. The article is entiled: “Mitochondria in cell life, death and disease”.

90th Anniversary of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology

On 4th December 2008 in the Mirror Room of the Staszic Palace (the Polish Academy of Sciences) prof. Adam Szewczyk, the Acting Director of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, inaugurated the 90th Anniversary of the Institute and welcomed honorable guests and employees of the Institute.

Science Festival 2008

Again, as every year, we took part in the XII edition of the Science Festival in 2008. Due to the building repairs at the Nencki Institute only 4 lectures were held at the International Centre of Biocybernetics. All of them were very highly appreciated by the audience members. In 2009 we will return to the previous participation formula.

The Scientific Council of the Nencki Institute during its session on May 16th 2008 expressed its opinion on the government project of the reform of science and higher education in Poland. The Council decided to support the pro-reformatory resolution of the Scientific Council of The Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics in Warsaw and the petition of the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology to actively participate in the discussion on the proposed reform.

Report of the FEBS evaluation panel visit 2003

The members of the evaluation panel received extensive electronic documentation describing the Institute organisation and scientific activities prior to the visit. The panel listened to the brief presentation of the departments and had constructive discussions. Finally, the panel exchanged their views concerning the day’s events.
